A Tribute to Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö

June 28, 2009 Adam Leave a comment

Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of the parinirvana of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö, perhaps the greatest master of the previous century. We hope you enjoy the following film from Remembering the Masters. Although slightly biased here at the House, we think it is incredible.

Translation Symposium – Further Reading

From Lotsawa School News:

Yesterday I had the good fortune to attend the Rangjung Yeshe Institute’s Symposium on Buddhism Translated. The speeches by John Dunne, Tom Tillemans and Sara McClintock were every bit as stimulating as I had anticipated, and each one of them brilliant in its own way. They also provided plenty of pointers to further research material, which is what I would like to highlight here. Dr. John Dunne, for example, during his lively power-point enhanced examination of mindfulness made reference to a wonderful article by Jay Garfield entitled Translation as Transmission and Transformation, which is available online here and highly recomended. Professor Tom Tillemans led us through an enlightening investigation of why translation often fails, with particular reference to problems in translating texts on logic and epistemology (Skt. pramana), during which he referred, among many other sources, to Quine’s famous thesis on the indeterminacy of translation, an important idea although widely dismissed and regarded by many, including Tillemans, as extreme. For her part, Dr. Sara McClintock introduced the brilliant Umberto Eco’s theories on the role of the reader into her lucid  discussion of the importance of narrative in Buddhism.

Hopefully it will not be too long before the lectures appear online.

If you have not yet been over to the new Dharma Sun* website, then point your browser in that direction and get over there as soon as possible. You’ll find some videos of Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche’s celebrated Saturday Talks at Ka Nying Shedrup Ling in Boudhanath, Nepal. These regular weekly talks have become something of an institution, and an essential part of any Dharma pilgrimage to the Kathmandu Valley. Don’t forget to make a donation, and support this effort to make the genuine Dharma freely and widely available.

*Dharma Sun is a translation of Chökyi Nyima

Anniversary of Longchen Rabjam

“My delight in death is far, far greater than

The delight of traders at making vast fortunes at sea,

Or the lords of the gods who vaunt their victory in battle;

Or of those sages who have entered the rapture of perfect absorption.

So just as a traveller who sets out on the road when it is time,

I, Pema Ledrel Tsal, will not remain in this world any longer,

But will go to dwell in the stronghold of the great bliss of deathlessness.”

Today is the anniversary of the great Dzogchen master Longchen Rabjam. (This year also marks the 700th anniversary of his birth in 1308)

Click here to listen to mp3 recordings of his inspiring last testament, The Immaculate Radiance, published by Dharma Publishing as Now That I Come to Die.

Search for the only Sera Khandro photo in the world

September 9, 2007 Adam 3 comments

Dear Tibetan/Buddhist Studies Friends,

Khenpo Tenzin Ozer from Dralek Monastery in Gandze Autonomous Prefecture is desperately trying to find a German (?) man to whom he loaned a precious photograph. The photograph is the only image of Sera Khandro (Bde ba’i rdo rje, 1892-1940) in the world. The man in the photograph attached to this email promised to take the precious photograph of Sera Khandro to Germany to have it cleaned approximately 5 years ago. Khenpo Tenzin Ozer urgently requests that if anyone knows the name, whereabouts, and/or contact information of this man that they kindly contact me so I can help track down this photograph. Khenpo tells me that the man who has Sera Khandro’s photograph is German and speaks good Lhasa dialect Tibetan. Beyond this, he knows nothing else about him.

Please if you could take a moment to look at the attached JPG photograph to see if you recognize the Western man in the picture, it would be immensely helpful if you email me at shj2102@columbia.edu . Please pass this message on to anyone who has Tibetan Studies contacts in Europe/Germany or contacts with Buddhist Centers in Germany.

Thank you very much for your help in this important matter.

Best Wishes,
Sarah Jacoby
